I have used a friend of mines coining press, which is 150 tons, and hits so fast you are still looking for it to hit after its already over- and that works great forging thin stuff. Some things, you need to hit ONCE, other things, it makes more sense to hit a lot of times.Ī press wont solve all your problems, but its a handy arrow in your quiver. There are high speed presses, which are one way around this- obviously, you dont buy em at Harbor freight for a hunnert bucks.Īnd there is a reason why most blacksmiths have BOTH a hydraulic press and a power hammer. I make dies for my press, and forge certain things with it- but its absolutely true that a 100lb die will suck the heat out of a piece of 3/8" round very quickly.įor some things, it works great, for other things, it doesnt work very well.
